COUNSELORS IN TRAINING (CIT)

Counselors In Training (CIT's) have supported our Summer Camps for years! A tradition that started in the 1980's, the role of the CIT began organically: As teens that grew out of the age range of our camps - if they had proven to be very helpful as they become older campers were invited to return to help staff as a volunteer. Through the year 2010, the role of the CIT which started as something very helpful - was gaining in popularity and many teens (and parents) wanted to be involved. It became such a sought after experience, that it many seasons were somewhat chaotic, demanding some organization.

In 2011 Parks organized the program to fit the needs of the camp season so all the enthusiasm and help from our teen volunteers would be effective and a great experience for the volunteer, campers and staff. We established the application and interview requirement, added an orientation, set limits to the number of volunteers needed for each camp session. Since this process was launched Explore Nature has received the support of hundreds of CIT's, who in turn have mentored and guided thousands of kids in camps!

The role of a CIT is important as a support to staff, and as an example for the campers. Our staff need volunteers that are eager to learn the routine and adapt quickly, and take initiative to be helpful at all times. Responsible and dependable are key values in every CIT. We look to CIT's to model the behavior for younger campers, to set the tone for a positive, controlled environment. Leadership qualities are essential.

THANKS for supporting teen service, and helping to encourage and foster leadership and a love of nature.
